After a long and costly journey, the Aquarena is set to reopen its doors to the public, bringing a sense of excitement and relief to the swimming community in St. John's. A much-needed haven for swimmers has finally emerged from the depths of renovation!
The closure of the Aquarena in 2023 left a void for swimmers and swim clubs, but now, after more than two years and a $25 million investment, the facility is ready to welcome back its patrons.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the pool itself is open, not all amenities are ready for public use just yet. Swim teams were granted the honor of being the first to dive into the newly renovated pool on Wednesday, but the general public will have to wait a little longer for their turn.
Nathan Wilson, a member of the St. John's Legends club, expressed the collective sentiment: "It's a huge relief to be back in this spacious facility. We've been eagerly awaiting this moment, and it's a significant milestone for the entire swimming community."
The Aquarena's closure and subsequent renovations were part of a larger plan to prepare for the 2025 Canada Games in St. John's. Originally built for the Canada Games in 1977, the facility has undergone a significant transformation.
Among the notable upgrades are a new one-meter diving tower, an advanced timing system, and family-friendly change rooms in a fully accessible space. Additionally, a brand-new waterslide is set to be a thrilling addition, although it will be slightly smaller than its predecessor.
"It's an incredible feeling to see the athletes back in the pool," said Craig Neil, general manager of The Works. "We're thrilled to offer this space to the community, and we're confident that the Aquarena will continue to be a beloved destination for swimmers and fitness enthusiasts alike."
However, some features, such as saunas and hot tubs, are still a couple of months away from being operational. The Tim Horton's inside The Works is also expected to reopen at a later date.
Neil emphasized the facility's long-standing reputation and the devotion of its patrons: "The Aquarena has been a staple in the community for many years, and we believe that people will return with enthusiasm."
