The Boston Red Sox have made a notable addition to their roster for the upcoming 2026 Spring Training by inviting four players who are not on the official roster. These include infielder Brendan Rodgers, catcher Matt Thaiss, and right-handed pitchers Kyle Keller and Vinny Nittoli.

Unfortunately, mid-season injuries struck; he was placed on the Injured List due to a left oblique strain on June 18, which sidelined him for the rest of the year. Drafted third overall by the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, Rodgers has accumulated a career batting average of .261 over 495 Major League games, which translates to 471 hits, including 96 doubles, eight triples, 47 home runs, and 208 RBIs. In his career, he has predominantly played at second base, where he has made 426 starts, but he has also taken the field at shortstop and as a designated hitter.
Next up is Matt Thaiss, who at 30 years old, had a split season in 2025 between the Chicago White Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays, playing 35 games for the White Sox and 25 for the Rays. He finished the season with a batting average of .218, totaling 34 hits out of 156 at-bats, which included six doubles, one triple, a home run, and 29 walks. He made 48 starts as a catcher and was utilized once as a designated hitter. Thaiss also had a brief stint in Triple-A with Durham, where he hit .200 in 16 games. Originally drafted 16th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, his Major League stats show a batting average of .210 across 305 games, featuring 172 hits, 29 doubles, one triple, 23 home runs, and 95 RBIs. His versatility is evident, as he has played various positions, making significant contributions as a catcher, third baseman, first baseman, designated hitter, and even a couple of games in left field.
Kyle Keller, at 32 years old, spent his 2025 playing season in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league, marking his fourth consecutive year there and his second with the Yomiuri Giants. He posted an impressive 3.11 ERA over 46.1 innings pitched, with 49 strikeouts across 45 appearances. Over his entire NPB career, Keller boasts an impressive 2.42 ERA in 158 games, showcasing his effectiveness on the mound. Originally drafted in the 18th round by the Miami Marlins in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, Keller has also seen action in 44 Major League games with the Marlins, Los Angeles Angels, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Lastly, we have Vinny Nittoli, who at 35 years old, had a varied 2025 season split between the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles organizations. He recorded a 4.58 ERA over 39.1 innings, striking out 46 batters in 37 Triple-A games, including one start. His overall minor league statistics are equally noteworthy, with a 4.41 ERA in 258 games, featuring 410 strikeouts across 363 innings. Drafted in the 25th round by the Seattle Mariners in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, Nittoli has made a mark in the Major Leagues as well, registering a solid 2.41 ERA over 15 games with several teams, including the Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Athletics, and Orioles across the last few seasons.
