A Nation Mourns, Cricket Pauses: BPL Matches Rescheduled After Former PM Khaleda Zia's Passing
In a move that underscores the profound impact of a political leader's legacy, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the postponement of two Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches originally slated for December 30th. This decision comes in the wake of the passing of Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh's former Prime Minister, whose death has plunged the nation into a period of mourning. The news of the match cancellations broke shortly after the announcement of Zia's death, mere hours before the scheduled toss at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The BCB further clarified that no matches would be held on December 31st, aligning with the national holiday declared by the Bangladeshi government. However, matches scheduled for January 1st and 2nd in Sylhet will proceed as planned.
"The BPL Governing Council will release an updated schedule for matches commencing from January 5th, 2026, in due course," the board stated in a Tuesday evening announcement.
Khaleda Zia, who passed away at 6 am local time on Tuesday, served as Bangladesh's Prime Minister for two terms: from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006. As the country's first female Prime Minister and the wife of former President Ziaur Rahman, she held a pivotal role in Bangladeshi politics. Since 1984, she had been the chairperson and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), founded by her husband.
The BCB, in a heartfelt statement, expressed its gratitude for Zia's unwavering support for cricket's development in Bangladesh. "Her constant blessings and good wishes for the progress of cricket in this country are deeply appreciated," the statement read. "During her tenure as Prime Minister, she provided exceptional support for the sport's growth, significantly contributing to improvements in cricket infrastructure and its nationwide popularity. Her vision and encouragement laid the groundwork for many of the advancements cricket enjoys today."
"In respect for the nation's mourning and to honor Begum Khaleda Zia's legacy, the BCB has decided to cancel today's scheduled BPL matches, which will be rescheduled. Further details regarding the revised fixtures will be communicated shortly."
BCB President Aminul Islam shared personal reflections, recalling Zia's encouragement and support for sports during his playing career. "Her genuine interest in cricket and her understanding of its unifying power for the nation were remarkable," he said. "Under her leadership, cricket in Bangladesh witnessed significant progress, particularly in terms of improved facilities and infrastructure, which laid a stronger foundation for the sport across the country."
Islam further highlighted the intertwined legacy of Zia and her late son, Arafat Rahman, whose vision and initiatives played a pioneering role in modernizing Bangladeshi cricket. "The progress the game has made over the years owes much to that period of forward thinking and investment," he emphasized.
The BPL's 2025-26 season commenced on December 26th, with three matchdays already completed. The rescheduled matches are unlikely to significantly disrupt the overall schedule, given the planned breaks between matchdays.
And this is the part most people miss: The impact of Zia's passing extends beyond the BPL. The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis has also postponed nine matches of the Dhaka First Division Cricket League, originally scheduled from December 30th to January 1st. "The postponed matches will be rescheduled, and a revised itinerary will be issued in due course," the CCDM announced.
