A shocking turn of events could mark the end of Brandon Aiyuk's time with the San Francisco 49ers. The team has placed the talented wide receiver on the reserve/left squad list, effectively ending his 2025 season and likely signaling the end of his tenure with the team.
Just a month ago, Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that Aiyuk was attending early-morning rehabilitation sessions at the team facility. However, Saturday's move suggests a concerning lack of commitment, with Aiyuk seemingly not fulfilling even the basic attendance requirements.
The 49ers initially hoped Aiyuk could contribute later in the season. Shanahan even described his status as "week to week" regarding a return to practice after last year's ACL injury. But with only three weeks of practice left in the regular season, the window for Aiyuk to get back in shape and play in an NFL game has virtually closed.
Back in July, the 49ers took a significant step by voiding the guaranteed money in Aiyuk's 2026 contract. According to reports from The Athletic, Aiyuk informed NFL Players Association representatives that he wouldn't contest this decision through a formal grievance.
Coach Shanahan admitted this was a rare situation, stating, "I’ve been coaching over 20 years, and I’ve never been in a situation where a contract’s been voided... It takes a lot of things to get a contract voided. Never dealt with that. It was unusual, but it’s stuff I can’t get into right now."
Aiyuk played a crucial role in the team's Super Bowl run in 2023, developing a strong connection with quarterback Brock Purdy and achieving a career-high 1,342 receiving yards. He later agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension in August 2024, resolving a protracted contract dispute. Unfortunately, a multi-ligament knee injury in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs sidelined him.
And this is the part most people miss... Aiyuk's potential absence could have been felt this season, especially with several other speedy receivers, like Ricky Pearsall, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins, dealing with injuries.
Shanahan emphasized the importance of speed on the field, stating, "The more speed on the field you have, the better... So when you’re missing a lot of guys who can run, those are guys that you’re possibly counting on, that definitely affects everything.”
With a likely separation looming in the offseason, and with Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne heading towards free agency, the team appears to be building its receiving corps around Pearsall. Pearsall had a promising start this season, but a knee injury kept him out for six games. He has only recorded 20 receiving yards in the three games since his return.
Watkins, Cowing, and veteran Demarcus Robinson are also under contract for next season.
