Dakar 2026: A Thrilling Battle for Glory
In a stunning display of skill and determination, Nasser Al-Attiyah, the star driver for Dacia, emerged victorious in the 2026 Dakar Rally, securing his sixth win and inching closer to the legendary record held by Stephane Peterhansel.
This year's Dakar campaign was one for the history books, with an unprecedented level of competition. A total of ten drivers representing five different manufacturers claimed stage wins, a stark contrast to the previous year's dominance by Toyota.
Al-Attiyah's journey was a rollercoaster ride. He experienced his fair share of ups and downs, but when it mattered most, he delivered with two crucial stage victories. His consistency and luck paid off, allowing him to avoid the pitfalls that befell many of his rivals.
The first week saw Ford emerge as a formidable force, with all four factory drivers showcasing the upgraded Raptor's potential. However, their performance fluctuated wildly, mirroring Toyota's inconsistent form with their new Hilux. This volatility created an opportunity for Al-Attiyah to strike on Stage 6, where he claimed his first win and took the lead.
As the rally progressed into its second week, the battle for overall honors remained intensely competitive. It wasn't until Stage 10 that Al-Attiyah began to establish himself as the clear favorite.
The turning point came on the second marathon stage when Ford's Mattias Ekstrom and Mitch Guthrie lost significant time due to navigation errors. This opened the door for Al-Attiyah, who seized the opportunity and extended his lead.
Al-Attiyah's path to victory became clearer on Stage 11 when last year's runner-up, Henk Lategan, dropped out due to a broken wheel nut. With Nani Roma as his only remaining serious challenger, the Qatari driver entered the final two days with a comfortable 12-minute buffer.
Controlling the closing stages with precision, Al-Attiyah crossed the finish line with a winning margin of 9 minutes and 42 seconds. With six Dakar victories under his belt and having driven for four different manufacturers, the 55-year-old solidifies his place among the most decorated cross-country rallying drivers in history.
But here's where it gets controversial... Al-Attiyah's win also marked just the second overall victory for the Renault Group in Dakar, a fact that might spark some debate among enthusiasts. The first victory came way back in 1982 with Claude Marreau's triumph in a Renault 20 Turbo 4X4.
And this is the part most people miss... Al-Attiyah's achievement is even more remarkable when you consider that he has won with four different manufacturers. Only two more victories separate him from the legendary Peterhansel, who dominated both the car and motorcycle categories.
As for the battle for the final podium spot, it was a thrilling contest between Ekstrom and Sebastien Loeb right up until the final day. Ekstrom, a two-time DTM champion, had an impressive showing with three stage victories, but a costly 30-minute loss on Stage 9 forced him to defend his position against Loeb, who had quietly climbed up the ranks with consistent performances.
In the end, Ekstrom held on to third place by a narrow margin of 37 seconds, matching his best result from 2023. Loeb, on the other hand, had to settle for fourth, failing to register a stage win for only the third time in his illustrious career.
So, what do you think? Is Al-Attiyah's achievement a testament to his skill and versatility, or does it highlight the strength of the Renault Group's technology?
