Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza recently had an incredibly positive interaction with the Raiders organization at the NFL scouting combine, and he's buzzing about it. Mendoza described his formal meeting with the Raiders as "fantastic." He shared that the coaching staff went through some of his past game footage and even drew up plays on a whiteboard. He felt it was a "great meeting" and a clear sign of the team's serious interest. He had the chance to connect with Klint Kubiak, the Raiders' new head coach, and John Spytek, the general manager. But the absolute highlight for Mendoza was a brief phone call with his idol, Tom Brady, a minority owner of the Raiders. "I was able to say a brief hello to Brady on the phone when I walked in and that was really special to me," he expressed, adding his hope to meet him in person someday and learn from him.
Kubiak and his team put Mendoza through a rigorous, yet illuminating, evaluation. "I would say they are very football-savvy, which is great to see," Mendoza remarked. He was particularly impressed with their teaching methodology, noting, "They taught me a play and had their whole progression of how they teach their quarterbacks the play. It was very similar to how my Indiana progression was." As someone who identifies as a "Type A guy," Mendoza appreciated the detailed breakdown of each play, including contingencies for problems, optimal drop-back techniques, and strategic progressions. "And that’s something I really enjoy," he stated.
While many speculate that the Raiders are heavily leaning towards selecting Mendoza with the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft on April 23rd in Pittsburgh, Mendoza remains grounded. "I know they have the prospective No. 1 pick, but anything can happen in the draft," he acknowledged. He's simply focused on the opportunity and is ready to give his all to whichever team ultimately drafts him.
