A Tale of Broken Promises
In 2022, Labor made bold commitments to upgrade Maroondah Hospital, now renamed Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, with a construction start date set for 2025. However, as of 2026, there's been radio silence on the project since 2023.
The Andrews government pledged a substantial investment of $850 million to $1.05 billion to deliver, rebuild, and refurbish the hospital, but the lack of updates has sparked concerns. A public statement in 2023 mentioned early design expressions of interest and a 2025 construction start, creating anticipation for the 2500 jobs it promised.
Controversy Unveiled
But here's where it gets controversial: The Age has confirmed that the business case for the hospital was completed as early as March 2025, yet the government refuses to release it, citing cabinet confidentiality. This has led to speculation about the project's future and the potential for a change of plans.
In 2024, there were reports of discussions to move the hospital to a different location due to redevelopment challenges, which the Health Minister vigorously denied. Despite this, the delay in construction and updates has left many questioning the project's timeline and design.

Independent MP Will Fowles, formerly of the Labor Party, echoed these sentiments, stating that despite promises made eight years ago, nothing has changed at Maroondah Hospital.
