A lonely rhea named Silvia is searching for love this Valentine's Day, and her story is one that tugs at the heartstrings.
The Search for a Feathered Soulmate
Silvia, a rhea bird, has been living at a sanctuary in Tonbridge, and her caretakers are determined to find her a companion. But here's where it gets controversial: they want to find a soulmate for Silvia who can move in with her, as traveling to another sanctuary might cause her anxiety.
Harle, the spokesperson for the sanctuary, explained the unique naming process for these birds. "We wanted to have some fun with the name rhea, so we named one Chris, after the late musician. And Silvia was named after the Roman Goddess, Rhea Silvia, the mother of Romulus and Remus."
Rheas, native to South America, have a lifespan of 10-15 years in the wild, but can live even longer in captivity. "We're hoping this Valentine's Day will bring Silvia her perfect match," Harle said. "He's been alone since his brother, Chris, passed away, and we want to give him a chance at love again."
And this is the part most people miss: finding a suitable mate for a rhea is not just about romance; it's about providing a companion to ease the loneliness and improve their overall well-being.
So, as we approach Valentine's Day, let's keep an eye out for Silvia's potential soulmate. Will he find his feathered love? Only time will tell.
