Marburg Virus Outbreak in Ethiopia: Swift Response and Successful Containment (2026)

Imagine a deadly virus outbreak being contained in just three months—a remarkable feat that has just been achieved in Ethiopia. The country has officially declared the end of its first-ever Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak, a severe and often fatal illness caused by the Marburg virus. But here's where it gets even more impressive: this success was the result of a swift, coordinated response led by the Ethiopian government, with crucial support from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The outbreak, first confirmed on November 14, 2025, in the South Ethiopia Region, affected four districts—Jinka, Malle, Arba Minch, and Hawassa in the Sidama Region. It resulted in 14 confirmed cases, including nine deaths and five recoveries, with an additional five probable deaths. And this is the part most people miss: three health workers were among those infected, two of whom tragically lost their lives, underscoring the virus's severity and the critical need for robust infection prevention measures.

From the outset, WHO collaborated closely with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to bolster response efforts at both national and sub-national levels. WHO Ethiopia played a pivotal role in coordinating operations and providing sustained technical and operational support across all response pillars, including leadership, surveillance, laboratory services, case management, infection prevention, logistics, risk communication, and community engagement.

Within 24 hours of the outbreak’s confirmation, WHO activated its emergency response mechanisms, deploying 36 experts to the affected areas and repurposing 28 additional staff to strengthen field operations. These teams offered technical assistance in surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory diagnostics, case management, and infection prevention. WHO also mobilized critical emergency supplies, such as laboratory testing equipment, viral hemorrhagic fever supplies, materials for treatment and isolation facilities, and vehicles to enhance field mobility. These efforts enabled the rapid expansion of diagnostic capacity, improved patient care, and supported effective outbreak control on the frontline.

Ethiopia’s prior investments in public health preparedness proved invaluable. Strengthened laboratory capacity, disease surveillance systems, a trained surge workforce, and coordination through the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre allowed for early detection, scaled-up diagnostics, responder deployment, and the continuity of essential health services. Initiatives like the Ethiopian Pandemic Multi-Sectoral Prevention, Preparedness and Response Project and the AVoHC-SURGE program played a key role in building these capacities.

But here’s a point that might spark debate: While Ethiopia’s response was undeniably successful, it raises questions about global preparedness for such outbreaks. Are other countries equally equipped to respond as swiftly and effectively? And what more can the international community do to support nations with fewer resources?

As Ethiopia moves forward, national authorities and partners are implementing follow-up programs to support Marburg survivors and enhance preparedness planning. After-action reviews are also underway to capture lessons learned and further strengthen readiness for future outbreaks. “Preparedness saved time, and time saved lives,” noted Dr. Senait Tekeste Fekadu, WHO Incident Manager for the MVD response. This statement highlights the importance of continued investment in health system resilience.

Marburg virus disease is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Early supportive care improves survival rates, though no licensed vaccines or therapeutics are currently available. Several candidates, however, are undergoing clinical trials, offering hope for future prevention and treatment.

Honourable Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health, emphasized, “The rapid containment of this outbreak reflects strong national leadership, effective coordination, and the dedication of frontline responders and communities.” Dr. Francis Chisaka Kasolo, WHO Representative in Ethiopia, added, “WHO remains committed to supporting Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to future public health emergencies.”
