Merrylands Stabbing: Man Charged with Murder After Escaping Hospital (2026)

Bold opening: A violent stabbing spree in Merrylands has left one man dead and two others fighting for their lives, and now authorities say the alleged attacker had recently escaped from hospital care. But here’s where it gets complicated and controversial...

A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder after the Sydney-area incident in the city's western suburbs, which occurred at a shopping strip in Merrylands around 10am on Tuesday. The attack resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man at the scene, with a 47-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man both critically injured and hospitalized the following day.

Police say the suspect fled on foot and was apprehended nearby on Smythe Street. He has been charged with murder and two counts of intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He appeared in Parramatta Local Court after being refused bail.

CCTV footage circulating in local media appears to capture the early moments of the assault in a Nepalese grocery store: a man wearing a white bucket hat, shirt, and gray trousers approaches the counter and allegedly stabs the woman in the neck, with a nearby man also stabbed in the shop.

Additional footage shows the suspect fleeing the premises, continuing along a footpath and stabbing another man nearby. Other video from Nine News shows him running along a path beside railway tracks, while a bystander—a woman pushing a pram—begins to run as the suspect approaches, but she is not harmed.

The weapon reportedly used in the stabbings was a knife approximately 25 centimeters in length, according to Supt. Simon Glasser.

Authorities note that the 25-year-old has a history known to police that includes petty crime and several mental health incidents. Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed that the individual had escaped from care roughly 10 days before the attack while being transferred from Cumberland Hospital to Westmead Hospital Emergency Department for further assessment.

The district stated that Cumberland Hospital provides acute inpatient care for people with complex mental health needs and that attempts to contact the patient and their family were unsuccessful. A formal review of the man’s care and treatment will be conducted.

The incident prompted a public statement from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, which urged media and public discourse to be careful, accurate, and sensitive. NSW chair Dr. Ian Korbel emphasized that most people with mental health conditions are not violent and warned that sensationalized coverage can heighten stigma, fuel fear, and discourage people from seeking help.

Should there be stricter protocols for reporting on mental health-related violence, or is balanced, careful journalism sufficient to inform the public without demonizing vulnerable groups? Share your thoughts in the comments.
