Imagine arriving at the hospital, already anxious about your appointment, only to be met with a parking nightmare that leaves you late or even unable to attend. This is the reality that has caused significant distress for patients at University Hospital North Durham (UHND). An NHS Trust has issued a formal apology after severe parking issues led to patients missing crucial medical appointments, sparking widespread concern and frustration among locals and visitors alike.
But here's where it gets even more frustrating: the problem isn’t entirely new. Residents had warned of this very scenario when approximately 100 hospital parking spaces were removed from the Melbury Court car park to make way for new student accommodation. The City of Durham Parish Council highlighted that cars are often left blocking residential streets, with visitors describing the situation as “chaotic and deeply distressing.”
The County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust has acknowledged the issue and confirmed the creation of 70 additional parking spaces. However, this solution feels like a band-aid on a much larger wound, as parish councillor Grenville Holland pointed out. He emphasized, “This has caused real anxiety and frustration at what is already a difficult time for people.”
And this is the part most people miss: while plans for an extra 222 parking bays were approved in 2023, construction has yet to begin. The Parish Council has urged the Trust to collaborate on promoting the Sniperley Park and Ride service, which operates until 7pm and is just one stop from the hospital. Cllr Holland added, “We are not just highlighting the problem – we want to be part of the solution. For instance, integrating the Park and Ride scheme to meet demand could make a real difference.”
But is this enough? The Trust has expressed its commitment to resolving the issue, stating, “We fully acknowledge the parking pressures and apologise for the stress and inconvenience caused.” They’ve also redesigned parts of the car park and arranged additional staff parking at County Hall, bringing the total on-site spaces to just over 1,000, with around a third dedicated to patients and visitors. Yet, the loss of the Melbury Court car park continues to have a significant impact, leaving many to wonder: Are these measures truly addressing the root of the problem, or are they merely temporary fixes?
The Trust is exploring further options, including securing more staff parking at County Hall to free up public spaces and promoting alternative travel options like bus routes and patient transport services. But as Cllr Holland urged, “This situation needs urgent attention. We must work together to make access to healthcare easier, not harder, for the people of Durham.”
